Applying via WhatsApp in Switzerland: 5 things to check

Is WhatsApp offered for this vacancy? Check the official contact, documents, deadline and confirmation before applying by chat.

Reading format

Whether to apply via WhatsApp depends on the employer’s specific offer. An explicitly linked application process differs from an unsolicited message to a private number. Check the intended route before sending personal documents.

1. Check the offered channel

Does the official vacancy or careers page offer WhatsApp applications for this role? Open the link provided there or compare the phone number provided for WhatsApp applications. A randomly found phone number or profile picture alone does not confirm the right contact. If the route remains unclear, ask through the official contact or use the offered alternative.

2. Read the information about data processing

Check who operates the process, which details are requested and which privacy information applies. Send only documents needed for this application step. The messenger’s name alone establishes neither the lawfulness nor the security of the entire process.

One specific example: Viega’s privacy statement describes WhatsApp applications through PitchYou with transfer to the applicant management software SuccessFactors. The blanket claim that chat applications cannot reach an ATS is therefore incorrect. This example says nothing about another employer’s process or the route offered for a particular vacancy.

3. Clarify documents and the next step

Check whether the process starts with questions or requests a CV or other files. Follow the stated formats and describe experience relevant to the role. A short opening message is not automatically a complete application. Ask if it is unclear what is still missing.

4. Watch the deadline and confirmation

Note the deadline and send in time. Check whether the process provides a receipt or completion confirmation and mentions further steps. Do not equate a technical chat indicator with a job offer or confirmation of a complete application. If an expected confirmation is missing, ask a factual question through the stated contact.

5. Keep your own records

Record the employer, role, vacancy, date, channel and response. Keep the available documents and confirmations in a traceable way. If you are registered with the RAV, your individual job-search and evidence requirements apply. A screenshot, email or tool export alone does not guarantee acceptance.

The SECO leaflet on rights and obligations describes the individually agreed number of applications and required evidence. Clarify documentation questions with your RAV and follow the submission methods and deadlines that apply to you.

Your quick check before sending

  • Is this channel officially offered for this role?
  • Are the contact, required documents and deadline clear?
  • How will I recognise completion, and what will I record?
