It is a moment that many job seekers in Switzerland dread: the end of the framework period is approaching, and the number of remaining daily allowances is shrinking. Benefit exhaustion at the RAV is not uncommon, but it presents those affected with financial and organizational challenges. Why is this so relevant today? The current labor market is tight in certain sectors, and even highly qualified specialists often take longer to find a job than they initially thought.

What exactly does benefit exhaustion mean?

Benefit exhaustion occurs when you have completely used up your entitlement to unemployment daily allowances (ALV). In Switzerland—depending on your age, contribution period, and family situation—you are entitled to a specific number of daily allowances (usually between 260 and 520) within a framework period of two years. If these daily allowances are used up or the two-year framework period expires before you have found a new job, your benefits are exhausted. The RAV then no longer pays out daily allowances.

This does not mean that you are immediately out on the street, but it does require a proactive shift in your financial and professional planning.

How to prepare for benefit exhaustion

If you notice that your daily allowances are running low, you shouldn't wait until the very last day. Here are four concrete steps:

1. Analyze your financial situation Get a clear overview of your finances. What are your fixed expenses? Is there potential to save? If your savings are not enough to bridge the gap until your next job, you must contact social assistance (Sozialhilfe) in your municipality of residence at an early stage. Registering for social assistance requires a lot of documents and time, so start in good time.

2. Check health insurance premium reduction Without daily allowances, your income drops drastically. Immediately check whether you are entitled to premium reduction (IPV) for your health insurance. This is regulated on a cantonal level and can provide major financial relief.

3. Remain registered with the RAV? Many people don't know that they can remain registered with the RAV even after benefit exhaustion. Although you will no longer receive daily allowances, you can still benefit from counseling, the job network, and sometimes labor market measures. This is particularly useful if you still want professional support during your job search. However, you are then also obliged to fulfill the requirements of the RAV (such as job application efforts).

4. Alternative paths into the job market Use the time to rethink your search strategy. Are temporary work, part-time positions, or a career change an option? Often, getting a foot in the door of a new company is more important than finding the perfect dream job right away.

Reaching your goal with personal responsibility and structure

The phase shortly before and after benefit exhaustion is often psychologically stressful. You feel left alone by the system, and concerns about your livelihood grow. Precisely during this time, it is crucial not to fall into a passive victim role. Blind activism and sending out mass standard applications won't help now—on the contrary, they lead to even more frustration.

This is where we step in with PARAT. We believe that true professional self-determination is achieved through active, structured action. With our PARAT RAV-Tracking, you can keep track of your applications at all times. You can efficiently record your efforts and export them as a clean ZIP file for the RAV or the social welfare office. Don't use AI as an autopilot to blindly send out resumes, but as an intelligent tool to highlight your strengths in a targeted manner.

Benefit exhaustion is a harsh break, but it is not the end of your career. Those who actively embrace the situation, seek help in good time, and continue their job search in a structured way increase their chances of quickly regaining a foothold in the job market.
