Suitable work and the RAV: clarify the facts before declining

Discuss the offer, commute, conditions and open questions with the RAV instead of deriving a refusal from isolated guidelines.

Not every job that seems unsuitable can be declined without consequences. Equally, a single wage or journey figure does not answer every suitability question. What matters is the specific job, your situation and the applicable rules.

Gather facts about the offer

Record the duties, location, workload, hours, pay and contractual conditions. Separate confirmed information from points you still need to clarify. Personal preferences and demonstrable obstacles are not the same.

The SECO FAQ describes job-search obligations. The SECO AVIG ALE directive contains more detailed rules.

Look beyond one threshold

The assessment may consider customary working conditions, personal circumstances, abilities, previous work and pay, among other factors. Protection of previous occupational work does not apply in the same way to people under 30. A career preference alone therefore creates no general right to refuse a job.

For pay, insured earnings and possible compensatory payments must be considered together. Do not derive a certain answer from an isolated percentage.

For the commute, record actual door-to-door times, available transport and personal circumstances. Simply adding the outward and return journeys does not replace a case-specific assessment.

Ask before deciding

Fictional example: The shift starts before the first suitable transport connection. Document the start time and timetable and ask the RAV how this should be assessed in your case. The example does not establish automatic unsuitability.

Keep your enquiry factual: Which condition is unclear, which documents support it and when must you respond? Continue to observe existing appointments and deadlines. If a formal decision has been issued, check the remedies and time limits stated in it; an informal enquiry does not replace them.

Your next step

Prepare a short facts list and clarify open points with the RAV before declining. This article offers general guidance, not a binding assessment of your offer.
