1. Sursilvan (Oberländisch)
- Region: Vorderrhein Valley (Surselva), Medel, Lumnezia, Tavetsch, and the Imboden region.
- Distinctive feature: Demographically the strongest idiom, spoken by around 50% of all Romansh speakers. Characteristics include replacing the old Romance «ü» with a light «i» (e.g., glisch instead of glüsch for light) and the typical phonetic spelling «tg» (cuntent).
2. Sutsilvan (Unterländisch)
- Region: Hinterrhein areas in Central Grisons (Domleschg, Heinzenberg, Schams/Val Schons, Val Ferrera).
- Distinctive feature: The smallest and most endangered written idiom. It uses special circumflexes (
â,ê) to preserve subtle local dialect differences in writing.
3. Surmeiran (Oberhalbsteinish / Albula Valleys)
- Region: Oberhalbstein (Surses, e.g., Savognin, Bivio) and the Albula Valley.
- Distinctive feature: The linguistic and geographical bridge idiom between Sursilvan in the west and the Engadin idioms in the east. Due to its balanced structure, Surmeiran served as a central link in developing the common standard language.
4. Puter (Upper Engadin)
- Region: Upper Engadin (St. Moritz, Samedan, Zuoz, Pontresina) and Bergün.
- Distinctive feature: Part of the «Ladin» language group. It is characterized by the preservation of typical umlauts «ü» and «ö» (e.g., ögl for eye). In 1560, the very first printed Romansh text was published in Puter by Jachiam Bifrun.
5. Vallader (Lower Engadin)
- Region: Lower Engadin (Scuol, Zernez, Ramosch) as well as the Val Müstair (Val Müstair with the dialect Jauer).
- Distinctive feature: The second-largest idiom (approx. 25% of speakers). Like Puter, it belongs to Engadin Ladin, but is characterized by smoother final syllable vocalizations.
Rumantsch Grischun (RG): The Unified Standard Since 1982
Since five different written languages led to immense fragmentation in the digital age and in administrative affairs, the Lia Rumantscha commissioned Zurich linguist Prof. Dr. Heinrich Schmid in 1982 to develop a unified written language.
The result was Rumantsch Grischun (RG):
- The majority rule: RG is not an artificial creation, but is based on the mathematical majority principle of the three most vital main idioms (Sursilvan, Surmeiran, and Vallader). If a word form matches in 2 out of 3 idioms, it is adopted into RG.
- Usage: The Canton of Grisons and the Swiss Confederation communicate in official matters and digital interfaces exclusively in Rumantsch Grischun.
