The birth of a child also changes your administrative situation. If you are unemployed, registering with the RAV alone does not establish entitlement to maternity allowance. This article helps you organise the next enquiries; it does not calculate an individual entitlement.
Clarify entitlement and the amount
Unemployed mothers may also receive maternity allowance. The AHV/IV information sheet 6.02 explains the conditions and special cases. The responsible compensation office examines your case. Do not assume that months receiving unemployment daily allowances count as particular months of employment.
The allowance normally lasts 14 weeks or 98 days from birth; extensions are possible under certain conditions. Special rules apply to the amount and the transition from previous social insurance daily allowances. Ask the compensation office to confirm entitlement, duration and the actual amount instead of treating an online guideline as a promise.
Prepare notifications and documents
Notify the responsible offices of the birth and ask the compensation office how to submit the application. Ask the RAV and unemployment insurance fund which information they need. Keep a list of offices, contacts, requested documents and agreed dates.
During maternity leave there is no entitlement to unemployment benefit; accordingly, you do not have to fulfil unemployment insurance obligations during this period. Notify the RAV of your leave in good time.
Fictional example: A certificate from your former employer is missing. Record when you requested it and ask the compensation office how to submit the outstanding document later. Do not invent information to make a form appear complete.
Discuss subsequent benefit payments
Before the allowance ends, clarify with the RAV and unemployment insurance fund which registration, availability, job-search efforts and documents are required for subsequent benefits. If you resume full or part-time work during the regular allowance period, entitlement to maternity allowance ends early. Discuss a planned return to work with the compensation office beforehand and the subsequent unemployment insurance conditions with the RAV and unemployment insurance fund.
