ATS in Switzerland 2026: Why Your CV Really Gets Filtered Out
Have you ever wondered if your application is even read by a real human? The short answer: Often, software makes the decision in the first step. So-called Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) filter out candidates mercilessly.
An ATS is not an intelligent recruiter who reads between the lines. It is a dumb machine that looks for clear rules and patterns. If you know the rules, you win. If not, you end up in the digital wastepaper basket.
The Myth of AI Selection
Many job seekers believe that ATS systems are driven by highly complex AI that magically evaluates CVs. In reality – especially with SMEs in Switzerland – these systems are often much simpler. They are programmed to parse text (read and structure it) and search for keywords.
The main problem is not that the systems are too strict. The main problem is that many CVs are formatted in a way that the system simply cannot decipher the content.
3 Reasons Why the ATS Dislikes Your CV
To ensure your application clears the machine hurdle, you must avoid the most common pitfalls:
- Complex layouts and columns: The system reads from top to bottom and left to right. If you use a two-column table, the system often reads the entire left column first, then the right. The result is a jumble of letters.
- Icons and graphics: Bar charts for your language skills might look chic, but an ATS cannot interpret "4 out of 5 stars" as "business fluent". Use clear text instead.
- Incorrect file formats: Never send your CV as an image or in exotic formats. A clean PDF is the gold standard, but make sure the text in the PDF is selectable (not scanned as an image).
How to Optimize for ATS (Without Forgetting the Human)
The trick is to write a CV that the system can process without errors, but that ultimately also convinces the human recruiter.
- Use standard terms: If the job advertisement says "Project Management", do not write "responsibility for cross-team initiatives". The system searches exactly for "Project Management".
- Classic structure: Keep the familiar headings such as "Professional Experience", "Education", and "Skills".
- Use PARAT templates: When you apply using PARAT CV templates, you ensure that the layout is built to be ATS-friendly in the background. We avoid code chaos in our PDFs.
